In this video I demonstrate how to play a beginner's version of "Shady Grove."
There are two variations provided, the first one is an easy version, the second adds slides and hammer-ons; it has more ornamentation.
I go through the song measure by measure very slowly. Detailing the right and left hands.
On screen through the video are numbers on the screen so you can see which strings you are hitting.
Provided with this video is the Tablature in PDF format.
Knowledge of basic rolls such as forward and alternating thumb is assumed. However, it's not too hard to jump in.Anyone purchasing this course has email access to me for any questions concerning the material. Video as well as audio recorded using a high quality condenser microphone
I have been playing and teaching for over 20 years. During that time I've been fortunate enough to perform on the stages of Carnegie Hall, Ryman Auditorium and The Grand Ole Opry. In addition to playing as a solo artist I perform with the Chuck Nation bluegrass band, as well as in the Banjo+Cello duo called Bow N’ Banjo. I'm a three time Georgia State Banjo and Flatpick Guitar winner and the 2006 Merlefest Banjo winner.
I studied Music Theory and Jazz Improvisation under nationally acclaimed pianist Kevin Bales for five years. Studying improvisation under a pianist provided me with a unique outlook for all of my music studies. My extensive training in a variety of musical systems (Bluegrass, Jazz, Popular, Classical) has given me knowledge of both the formal and aural/traditional systems.
When I'm not performing or teaching, I spend most of my time developing educational material for banjo as well as writing original compositions.
